The KI Community and Business Expo held in Kingscote last week was a great success, opened by Leon Bignell MP, Minister for Tourism, with 28 exhibitors and more than 150 people attending.

The Expo provided an opportunity for businesses and the community to engage with developers, KI industry associations, state government and some Island businesses which are expanding.

Also on that day, my Local Advisory Board on Economic Development met.  Minister Bignell attended and addressed the Board and thanked them for their work.  There were two presentations – one from SA Power Networks on the replacement undersea cable and the other from SA Water, with an update on the water plan for the Island.

QantasLink commenced its flights from Adelaide on Monday 4th, with Premier Jay Weatherill, Deputy Premier John Rau, and Minister Bignell all flying in to mark this historic occasion.

Together with Mayor Peter Clements, I joined in a tour by KI Council CEO Andy Boardman of the new terminal and later in the day, we hosted a business networking dinner with some small business owners.

This event provided the chance for our guests to enjoy local fare courtesy of the team from Cactus, along with KI Brewery beers and Islander Estate Wines.  I found it valuable to mingle and hear about the issues our businesses are facing.

While on the Island, the Premier, Deputy Premier and Minister for Tourism attended the meeting of my Local Advisory Board on Housing.

The Board considered a demographic report which highlighted that even without any developments, it is estimated that at least 180 more houses would be needed by 2031 to cope with the Island’s growing population.  With the $171 million worth of developments, that figure expands to 890 houses, in the same timeframe, so you can see how important it is that we address our housing needs.

As this is my last column for 2017, may I wish Island residents, and visitors, a wonderful Christmas and a happy and safe 2018 ahead and thank you all for your support and guidance during the year.

I for one will enjoy my break and will return to my desk early in the New Year to continue the work of the Commissioner’s Office.
